Dale Hunt, PhD, JD, Ethan Russo, MD, and Robert C. Clarke, cannabis industry professionals, have combined their expertise and joined forces to form the first cannabis company to focus on intellectual property (IP) protection specifically for independent plant breeders and licencing IP for access to markets worldwide. The company, named Breeder’s Best, hopes to bring to cannabis a global plant-licensing model that has proven successful in other agricultural industries.
“We have only scratched the surface of what cannabis can do to improve and enhance our lives,” Dr. Ethan Russo said. “Breeder’s Best will do that. In the coming decades, identifying, selectively breeding for, and utilising specific chemical components will truly transform medicine.” Dr. Russo is a board-certified neurologist, a preeminent medical cannabis expert, the author of more than 50 peer-reviewed medical journal articles, and a former GW Pharmaceuticals Senior Medical Advisor as well as the Sativex® and Epidiolex® clinical trial Study Physician and Medical Monitor.
“I am very excited for the opportunity that Breeder’s Best represents, which is to make cannabis safer and better through the work of cannabis artisans emphasising organic and regenerative agriculture to produce crops with greater biochemical diversity and a broader range of therapeutic benefits,” added Russo.
The liberalisation of global cannabis laws and growing public acceptance of cannabis have resulted in a rapidly increasing demand for cannabis flower, as well as cannabis-derived therapeutics and products. According to Prohibition Partners, the international cannabis industry will be worth more than $103.6 billion by 2024.
Doc Ray has been breeding cannabis in Humboldt County, California, the heart of cannabis country, for over 40 years. Doc is known for creating one-of-a-kind and highly medicinal cannabis strains for specific conditions, which began in 1984 when he created a plant to help his mother cope with the effects of cancer. Since then, he has worked as a caregiver for critically ill children and adults, developing and growing their medicine. Doc, a retired Army Green Beret, has a special place in his heart for other veterans and has developed two chemovars to help address PTSD symptoms, which he will licence to Breeder’s Best. “Breeder’s Best gives me a platform to move from obscurity into the light to ensure that the genetics I’ve developed to help people get to the people who need it on a global scale!” says Doc. The Breeder’s Best platform also ensures that what I’ve created is safeguarded and available to the world for future generations.”
Intellectual Property and Cannabis
While the cannabis industry offers significant opportunity, there is a critical gap that separates breeders’ creativity from markets that require products with unique and proven genetic profiles. Furthermore, there is typically very little IP protection to support good partnerships between cannabis brands and breeders. Breeder’s Best will bring these two key stakeholders together while legally protecting breeders’ genetic inventiveness.
“Our mission is to connect the best Cannabis genetics to the greatest needs and most promising commercial opportunities,” says Dale Hunt, founder and CEO of Breeder’s Best. To accomplish this, we have assembled an unrivalled team of experts with extensive experience at all levels of the cannabis supply chain. Breeder’s Best will be positioned to meet the demands of an increasingly professional and GMP-oriented marketplace while doing business in a way that benefits breeders and directs profitable and reliable business to growers who would otherwise be left behind as the industry matures. Breeder’s Best is poised to become the global leader in patented cannabis genetics and related products, thanks to our vision, team, model, know-how, and relationships.” Dr. Hunt has been practising intellectual property law for the past 23 years. He holds a PhD in plant cellular and molecular biology and has obtained thousands of patents and plant variety rights on behalf of his clients in over 30 countries.
“Cannabis use is finally becoming more acceptable. At Breeder’s Best, we provide independent Cannabis breeders with the opportunity to protect their unique varieties while also assisting them in placing those genetics in profitable markets. “This is a fantastic service for breeders who would rather focus on the art and science of breeding rather than the mechanics of commercialization,” said Breeder’s Best Director of Agronomy and Genetics, Robert C. Clarke. Mr. Clarke is a 40-year cannabis industry veteran best known for his books Marijuana Botany (1982) and Cannabis: Evolution and Ethnobotany (2013).
The Cannabis plant produces over 450 chemical components, many of which have therapeutic potential. However, decades of cannabis prohibition have resulted in a lack of genetic diversity and the dominance of only a small subset of potential agents worldwide.
Breeder’s Best is a privately held Cannabis IP genetics company that has been organised as a B Corporation to demonstrate their commitment to independent Cannabis breeders and to meeting the global needs of patients and consumers for superior products.
